Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano- Rome
Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano – The Mother of All Churches
The Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano (St. John Lateran) is one of Rome’s most important and awe-inspiring churches, serving as the cathedral of the Pope and the oldest basilica in the Western world. Founded by Emperor Constantine in 324 AD, it holds the title of “Mater et Caput” (Mother and Head) of all churches, making it the highest-ranking church in Christianity, even above St. Peter’s Basilica.
The basilica’s grand façade, with its towering statues of Christ, St. John the Baptist, and St. John the Evangelist, welcomes visitors into an interior filled with breathtaking frescoes, intricate mosaics, and colossal marble columns. Inside, the 12 monumental statues of the Apostles line the nave, while the golden coffered ceiling and the stunning papal altar reflect centuries of artistic excellence.
Adjacent to the basilica is the Holy Stairs (Scala Sancta), believed to be the staircase Jesus climbed during his trial before Pontius Pilate, brought to Rome by St. Helena. Pilgrims still ascend these sacred steps on their knees in devotion.
Whether admiring its architectural grandeur, exploring its sacred relics, or walking through its magnificent cloisters, San Giovanni in Laterano is a must-visit for history lovers, art enthusiasts, and pilgrims alike.
