Standing proudly in the heart of Zadar’s Roman Forum, the Church of St. Donatus is one of Croatia’s most iconic pre-Romanesque buildings and a symbol of the city itself. Built in the 9th century, this circular stone church is dedicated to Bishop Donatus, who oversaw its construction atop ancient Roman ruins—some of which remain visible in its foundation today.
With its thick stone walls, minimal decoration, and unique round form, the church reflects the spiritual strength and architectural simplicity of early medieval times. It was originally named the Church of the Holy Trinity, but was later renamed in honor of the bishop who shaped its legacy. Though no longer used for regular worship, it now serves as a concert venue, praised for its incredible acoustics and atmospheric setting.
