The Old Fortress of Corfu is one of the island’s most iconic landmarks, towering over Corfu Town and standing as a symbol of the island’s strategic significance throughout history. This massive Venetian fortress, built in the 15th century on the remains of earlier Byzantine fortifications, played a crucial role in defending Corfu from invaders during the Ottoman-Venetian Wars. It is located on a rocky promontory, effectively separating the fortress from the rest of the town by the Contra Fossa, a defensive water channel.
