Praça do Comércio – Lisbon
Praça do Comércio – Lisbon’s Grand Riverside Square
Praça do Comércio, also known as Terreiro do Paço, is one of Lisbon’s most stunning and historically significant squares, located along the Tagus River. Once the site of the Royal Ribeira Palace, which was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake, the square was rebuilt into a magnificent Neoclassical masterpiece, symbolizing Portugal’s resilience and maritime heritage.
Surrounded by graceful yellow arcaded buildings, the square features two major landmarks:
- Arco da Rua Augusta – A grand triumphal arch leading to Lisbon’s historic Baixa district. Visitors can climb to the top for breathtaking panoramic views.
- King José I Statue – A majestic equestrian monument honoring the king who led Portugal’s recovery after the earthquake.
Overlooking the Tagus River, Praça do Comércio is a lively hub of cafés, cultural events, and scenic promenades. Visitors can enjoy a stroll along the Cais das Colunas, admire golden sunsets over the river, or relax in one of the square’s historic cafés, such as the famous Martinho da Arcada.
Our Tiny Planet artwork of Praça do Comércio captures its majestic beauty and vibrant atmosphere in a stunning 360-degree perspective.
