St Mark’s Campanile -Venice
St. Mark’s Campanile – The Guardian of Venice’s Skyline
St. Mark’s Campanile (Campanile di San Marco) is the iconic bell tower of Venice, standing majestically in Piazza San Marco as a timeless symbol of the city’s history and grandeur. At 98.6 meters (323 feet) tall, it is the highest structure in Venice, offering spectacular panoramic views of the city’s winding canals, red-tiled rooftops, and the glistening waters of the Venetian Lagoon.
Originally constructed in the 9th century as a watchtower and lighthouse, the Campanile underwent several reconstructions due to earthquakes and lightning strikes. In 1902, the tower unexpectedly collapsed, but Venice faithfully rebuilt it brick by brick, completing the restoration in 1912 with the inscription “Com’era, dov’era” (“As it was, where it was”). The current structure retains its elegant red-brick façade, five bronze bells, arched belfry, and a golden weather vane featuring Archangel Gabriel.
A visit to St. Mark’s Campanile includes a scenic elevator ride to the top, where breathtaking views of St. Mark’s Basilica, the Grand Canal, the Doge’s Palace, and the distant Dolomite Mountains await. The tower has also played a historic role in science—Galileo Galilei famously demonstrated his telescope here in 1609.
