Zōjō-ji – Tokyo’s Temple Beneath the Tower
Nestled at the base of Tokyo Tower, the historic Zōjō-ji Temple offers a powerful contrast between ancient tradition and modern skyline. As the head temple of the Jōdo (Pure Land) Buddhist sect in the Kanto region, Zōjō-ji holds deep spiritual and historical significance. Originally founded in 1393, it was moved to its current location in 1598 by Tokugawa Ieyasu, the shogun who would go on to unify Japan.
The temple grounds feature the impressive Sangedatsumon (main gate)—a rare wooden structure that dates back to 1622, making it one of Tokyo’s oldest buildings. Beyond it lies the Main Hall (Daiden), peaceful gardens, and the Mausoleum of the Tokugawa shoguns, where six Tokugawa family members are buried. A touching sight within the grounds is the rows of small Jizō statues, dressed in red hats and bibs, placed there by parents to honor lost or unborn children.
While the towering silhouette of Tokyo Tower rises behind it, Zōjō-ji remains a symbol of resilience, faith, and balance between the old and new. It’s especially enchanting during cherry blossom season and in the quiet of early morning.
