Koningsplein – Place Royale, Brussels: The Historic Heart of the City

Koningsplein, also known as Place Royale, is one of Brussels’ most significant historical squares. Built on the site of the former main market and the original Royal Palace, which was destroyed by fire in 1731, this neoclassical square was designed by Barnabé Guimard and completed in the late 18th century. It stands today as a symbol of Belgium’s architectural and political heritage. At the center of Koningsplein is the Statue of Godfrey of Bouillon (Godefroid de Bouillon), a monumental bronze equestrian statue erected in 1848. Godfrey of Bouillon, a heroic figure of the First Crusade, led the Christian forces to capture Jerusalem in 1099. The statue portrays him raising his sword triumphantly, a symbol of courage, leadership, and religious devotion.
