Junghwajeon Hall – The Throne Hall of Deoksugung Palace
Junghwajeon Hall stands proudly at the center of Deoksugung Palace in Seoul, South Korea, serving as its main throne hall and the very heart of royal ceremonies during the late Joseon Dynasty and the Korean Empire. Originally constructed in the 17th century and rebuilt in 1906 after a fire, Junghwajeon is a stunning example of traditional Korean palace architecture, with its elegant rooflines, vivid dancheong (decorative coloring), and symbolic dragon carvings signifying royal authority.
As the throne hall, Junghwajeon was the setting for important state affairs—royal audiences, proclamations, and diplomatic meetings. Its spacious interior features a richly adorned throne platform and intricate woodwork, surrounded by folding screens and symbols of royal power. The harmony of architecture and symbolism reflects Confucian principles and Korea’s deep respect for monarchy and tradition.
What makes Junghwajeon especially captivating is its role during a transformative time in Korean history. Emperor Gojong, the last king of Joseon and first emperor of the Korean Empire, used this hall to assert Korea’s independence and modernization efforts in the face of growing foreign influence.
