Officially known as the Cathedral Church of the Virgin Mary of the Immaculate Conception, it is the oldest Gothic-style Catholic cathedral in South Korea and the seat of the Archdiocese of Seoul.
Completed in 1898, the cathedral was built during a time when Catholicism was emerging from centuries of persecution. Its elegant red-brick facade, pointed arches, and soaring bell tower offer a striking contrast to the neon-lit streets of Myeongdong. Inside, the tranquil interior is illuminated by intricate stained-glass windows, creating a peaceful retreat from the fast-paced urban surroundings.
Myeongdong Cathedral is also a site of historic significance. It played a key role in Korea’s democratization movement during the 1970s and 1980s, serving as a refuge for activists and a symbol of hope and justice. Today, it remains a living cultural and spiritual center, with daily Mass, community events, and a beautiful underground crypt open to the public.
