Tenryū-ji – Kyoto’s Timeless Temple of Zen and Nature
Set in the enchanting Arashiyama district of western Kyoto, Tenryū-ji is a masterwork of Zen Buddhism, founded in 1339 and recognized today as a UNESCO's verdensarvsliste. As the head temple of the Rinzai Zen sect, Tenryū-ji represents centuries of spiritual wisdom, artistic heritageog harmony with the natural world.
At the heart of the temple lies the stunning Sōgenchi Teien, a landscaped garden designed by the great Zen master Musō Soseki. With its reflective pond, elegantly placed stones, pine trees, and the Arashiyama mountains rising in the background, the garden embodies the Zen ideal of natural simplicity and inner stillness. It is one of the oldest surviving gardens in Japan to retain its original layout.
Tenryū-ji’s wooden halls and tatami rooms are tranquil spaces where light and shadow dance, inviting quiet reflection. Just beyond the temple grounds, a gate opens directly into the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, linking the spiritual calm of Tenryū-ji with one of Kyoto’s most iconic natural paths.
