Junghwajeon Hall – The Royal Heart of Deoksugung Palace
Junghwajeon Hall, the majestic throne hall of Deoksugung Palace in Seoul, is a centerpiece of Korean royal heritage. Originally built in the early 17th century and later reconstructed in 1906 after a devastating fire, this hall served as the main venue for royal ceremonies, political meetings, and state functions during the late Joseon Dynasty and the short-lived Korean Empire.
From the outside, Junghwajeon impresses with its grand, double-tiered roof, intricate dancheong (colorful traditional patterns), and ornamental dragon motifs symbolizing royal authority. Inside, the hall is richly decorated and carefully arranged, centered around the royal throne, backed by the iconic Irworobongdo—a painted screen depicting the sun, moon, and five peaks, symbolizing the king’s divine role as the mediator between heaven and earth.
Beyond its architectural beauty, Junghwajeon Hall holds deep historical significance. It was here that Emperor Gojong declared the birth of the Korean Empire in 1897, marking a moment of national pride and a shift toward modernization amidst a turbulent era.
