War Memorial of Korea – A Monument to Memory and Peace
The War Memorial of Korea, joka sijaitsee Yongsan, Seoul, is a solemn and expansive tribute to Korea’s military history and the sacrifices made for the nation’s freedom. Opened in 1994, the memorial occupies the site of the former South Korean Army headquarters and serves as a powerful educational space, commemorative site, and symbol of peace.
Covering centuries of conflict—from ancient battles to the pivotal Korean War (1950–1953)—the museum features six indoor exhibition halls filled with artifacts, documents, multimedia displays, and life-sized dioramas. These immersive exhibits offer insight into the experience of soldiers and civilians alike, blending historical accuracy with deeply human storytelling.
Outdoors, visitors encounter an impressive display of military hardware including tanks, aircraft, and naval vessels, along with numerous memorials. The most iconic of these is the Statue of Brothers, a deeply moving sculpture that depicts a South Korean officer and his younger brother, a North Korean soldier, embracing in a moment of reconciliation—symbolizing the pain of national division and hope for unity.
