Changgyeonggung Palace – A Tranquil Echo of Joseon Royalty
Located in the heart of Séoul, Changgyeonggung Palace is one of Korea’s most quietly beautiful royal palaces—a place where history, architecture, and nature blend in serene harmony. Originally built in 1483 by King Seongjong of the Dynastie Joseon, the palace was created as a residence for queens and royal elders, offering a peaceful environment rather than political grandeur.
Unlike the more imposing royal complexes, Changgyeonggung is known for its modest elegance. Structures like Myeongjeongjeon Hall, the oldest throne hall in Seoul, and Honghwamun Gate, with its curved roofs and simple lines, reflect the Confucian values of restraint and respect. The palace layout is open and inviting, designed to let light and landscape become part of the living space.
One of the palace’s most beloved features is Chundangji Pond, where lotus flowers bloom in summer and tree-lined paths glow in autumn colors. Originally part of the palace garden, the pond adds a poetic touch to the calm surroundings. Though the grounds were turned into a zoo and botanical garden during the Japanese occupation, they’ve since been restored to reflect their original dignity and cultural importance.
