Namsangol Hanok Village – A Tranquil Time Capsule of Joseon-Era Seoul
Namsangol Hanok Village, located near the base of 南山 in central ソウル, is a beautifully preserved cultural site that offers a window into traditional Korean life during the 李朝. Opened to the public in 1998, the village is home to five restored hanok (traditional Korean houses), each originally owned by aristocrats and government officials. These elegant wooden homes, complete with tiled roofs, paper-paneled doors, and inner courtyards, are laid out just as they would have been centuries ago.
Walking through the village feels like stepping back in time. The tranquil atmosphere is enhanced by manicured gardens, a flowing stream, a traditional pavilion, and a spacious courtyard where cultural events and performances often take place. From household furnishings and daily tools to examples of clothing and food preparation, the interiors of the hanok offer an intimate look at how Koreans lived, worked, and celebrated in past centuries.
One unique feature of the village is the Time Capsule Plaza, where a time capsule filled with 600 items representing modern Korean culture was buried in 1994, scheduled to be opened in the year 2394. It’s a fascinating contrast to the historical setting—reminding visitors of the deep link between past, present, and future.
