Gyeongbokgung Palace – The Grand Jewel of Joseon Dynasty
Gyeongbokgung Palace, majestically situated at the foot of Bugaksan Mountain in central Soul, is the largest and most iconic of the Five Grand Palaces built during the Joseon Dynasty. Originally constructed in 1395, just three years after the founding of the dynasty, Gyeongbokgung (meaning “Palace Greatly Blessed by Heaven”) served as the principal royal residence for centuries—representing the spiritual and political heart of the Korean kingdom.
The palace complex features a harmonious layout of courtyards, gates, pavilions, and lotus ponds. Its most famous structures include Geunjeongjeon Hall, where kings held official state functions, and Gyeonghoeru Pavilion, an elegant building standing on columns above a reflection pond. The grandeur of its architecture, with sweeping tiled roofs and vibrant dancheong patterns, showcases the beauty of traditional Korean design.
Though destroyed during the Japanese invasions in the late 16th century and again during Japanese occupation in the 20th century, the palace has been gradually restored to its former glory. Today, Gyeongbokgung is a living museum—complete with the National Palace Museum and the National Folk Museum within its grounds—and a cultural experience enhanced by the colorful royal guard-changing ceremony held daily at the main gate, Gwanghwamun.
