Jogyesa Temple – The Spiritual Heart of Seoul’s Zen Buddhism
Nestled among the busy streets of central Seoul, Jogyesa Temple is a peaceful sanctuary and the center of Korean Seon (Zen) Buddhism. Founded in the late 14th century and rebuilt in its current form in 1910, Jogyesa serves as the chief temple of the Jogye Order—the largest Buddhist sect in Korea. Despite its urban location near Insa-dong and Gyeongbokgung, the temple radiates serenity, drawing both worshippers and curious travelers alike.
At the heart of the temple is the Daeungjeon (Main Hall), where a majestic golden Buddha triad sits in silent meditation. The hall is beautifully adorned with vibrant dancheong (traditional Korean painting) and is often surrounded by colorful lanterns, especially during the Lotus Lantern Festival, held in celebration of Buddha’s Birthday each spring. Towering trees—including a massive 500-year-old white pine—stand as silent guardians of this sacred space.
