Namsangol Hanok Village – A Living Glimpse into Joseon-Era Seoul
Nestled at the foot of Namsan Mountain in the heart of Seoul, Namsangol Hanok Village is a beautifully restored enclave of traditional Korean homes, or hanok, that transports visitors back to the graceful simplicity of the Joseon-dynastin. Opened in 1998, the village features five meticulously reconstructed hanok residences, each once belonging to noble families and high-ranking officials, now carefully curated to reflect different aspects of life in historical Korea.
Wandering through the village, you’ll find tiled rooftops, stone courtyards, wooden verandas, and traditional interiors furnished with period-accurate household items. The peaceful setting is surrounded by gardens, pavilions, and a tranquil stream—making it a quiet oasis amid the modern high-rises of Seoul. The Cheonugak Pavilion and the village’s traditional time capsule, buried in 1994 and scheduled to be opened in 2394, add to the site’s cultural depth and symbolism.
Beyond the architecture, Namsangol offers immersive experiences—visitors can try calligraphy, wear hanbok, or participate in tea ceremonies and craft workshops, bringing Korea’s heritage to life in engaging and family-friendly ways.
