Tenryū-ji – A Zen Masterpiece in the Heart of Arashiyama
Located in Kyoto’s picturesque Arashiyama district, Tenryū-ji Temple is one of Japan’s most revered Zen temples and a UNESCO:s världsarvslista. Founded in 1339 by shogun Ashikaga Takauji to honor Emperor Go-Daigo, Tenryū-ji became the head temple of the Rinzai Zen sect and remains a living expression of spiritual depth, history, and harmony with nature.
The temple’s heart lies in its breathtaking Sōgenchi Garden, designed by famed Zen master Musō Soseki. This landscape garden—with its tranquil pond, seasonal foliage, and the Arashiyama mountains forming a natural backdrop—is one of the oldest in Japan to retain its original form. Inside the temple buildings, sliding doors open to quiet tatami rooms, inviting stillness and reflection.
Tenryū-ji is more than a historic site—it’s a gateway to Zen philosophy, offering visitors a serene path from temple halls to the famous Arashiyama Bamboo Forest just beyond its northern gate.
